So what is the “Id?” According to the Oxford dictionary it is “the part of the mind in which innate instinctive impulses and primary processes are manifest.” It is the primititave part of our mind that seeks to fulfill our baser needs; hunger, thirst, sleep, and pleasure (i.e. sex). It is present from birth and requires the development of the Ego and Superego to control it. Think of an infant that will scream until they get what they need, that is the Id. They have no control, they have no filter. Freud described our consciousness as an iceberg in which most of it is subconscious or not seen. The Id is the only part of our conscious that is fully invisible, unless we have poor impulse control. People who struggle with some psychiatric issues, some autism, and substance abuse issues tend to show their Id very loudly. If you think about it poorly controlled “hangry” is a manifestation of the Id, along with sex addictions.
Freud’s concepts of consciousness and personality are thought to be to simplistic and do not fully encapsulate the human psyche. The more I study the deeper and complex I realize we truly are, our minds, our souls, and our bodies. I also realize how interconnected they are, and how interdependent their functioning is. Freud’s concepts are a great entry level primer to start building on for our new understanding of ourselves, and why we feel and do the things we do. https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-the-id-2795275 Have a great day, and don’t forget to laugh 💞
