The superego has the highest level of conscientiousness in Freud’s theory, yet like the other two, it cannot exist without the others. The superego contains our sense of morality and ethics or aspirations for an unrealistic Nirvana. Its goal is to totally suppress the Id. I was going to use the analogy of the most “evil” creature versus the most “good” creature to describe the difference between the Id and the Superego, but I don’t want you to think that the Id is bad while thinking that the Superego is good. They are neither good nor bad they just are.
We cannot exist without both. The Ego’s goal is to keep each side in balance with reality. An overexaggerated sense of either or an underdeveloped ego causes problems. Freud felt that an overdeveloped superego or an ego unable to control the superego causes neurosis, such as depression or anxiety. An overdeveloped Id, or an ego unable to control the Id, causes psychosis, such as hallucinations, delusions, and complete breaks with reality.
Psychology today views Freud’s theory as antiquated and superficial. While it may just barely scratch the surface, for this novice it helps me to understand that there must be a balance. None of my thoughts are good or bad, they just are, the question is what kind of person do I want to be. How do I find a Happy medium between my needs and my ideals without beating myself up for being human? https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-the-superego-2795876 Have a great day 💞
