As I write this, I will be getting to the hospital in about 2 hours for my surgery to repair the fracture to my left leg. The fracture is a nasty one of the tibia which is the larger of the two bones in your lower leg, and I crushed mine right at the knee. As you can imagine I did not sleep well last night and my pain is worse. Yet, emotionally and mentally I am calm, in fact I would tell you that I’m not scared at all. That would be a lie according to the outward symptoms. Yet, I am not anxious and for that I am grateful. For today’s blog I’m using one of my text-blogs from just over a month ago.
Let’s talk about Fear. What exactly is fear? According to the Oxford dictionary Fear (verb) is defined as “be afraid of (someone or something) as likely to be dangerous, painful, or threatening.” In the article I’m linking today it talks about fear as being “To experience psychological fear, there must be the possibility of losing your life, or at least thinking you could.” When you 1st read the statement you think of dying, but it could be an existential meaning, i.e. Life as I Know it. What if you were facing possible life altering handicaps due to a sudden physical change? Would that not cause fear on a primal level?
When we hear someone talking about their fears, no matter their size, most of us start spouting the proverbial “Turn it over” “Have faith” “Trust in the plan” etc, etc, etc… How easy is it for you to turn something over and then never worry about it again? How about turning over something you have never experienced before and then not worrying again? I feel that we need to be able to show up and listen and HEAR what they are saying. Be there without judgment, share our experience, strength, and hope. Whatever you do, don’t push them off with a “Oh just pray about it” don’t be judgemental with a “where is your faith.” Even people of great faith struggle with fear, why do you think they are always praying? They have to keep turning it over. https://www.nancyberns.com/reduce-conflict-foster-healing-ten-tips-effective-listening.html https://news.ucdenver.edu/fear-a-four-letter-word-defined/ It is now time for me to pray and get ready to go, I will be staying in the hospital overnight, thank you for all your prayers and support.
