The importance of pain control

My nerve block wore off yesterday afternoon, and I had the most horrible night so far. It is getting better, but I’m still suffering. Did you know that pain is NOT a good thing? The old saying “no pain, no gain” is hogwash. Pain causes a stress reaction which elevates cortisol and other chemicals in your body. These chemicals not only block healing, they can cause damage. Pain control while healing is important, but that does not mean just filling up on narcotics which can have other negative side effects including addiction. Yesterday I mentioned RICE, and I can tell you that the ice surrounding my leg is making a huge impact on my pain. I also have my leg elevated, and I am doing toe points as often as I think of it to help prevent blood clots. I am taking all of my medications especially the non-narcotic ones. I am nibbling as much as possible, I don’t eat well when I’m hurting. Most importantly I am sleeping as much as I can. There are studies that show that you do your best healing during the Deep Sleep phase. That being said, I’m going to cut this short today and head back to sleep. https://www.nursingtimes.net/pain-management/understanding-the-effect-of-pain-and-how-the-human-body-responds-26-02-2018/  Have a great day and don’t forget to rest. 💞
